Learning to Use Watercolor (Blog post #1)

Recently, I got into painting with watercolors.  While I am still learning, and have much room for improvement, I am proud of what I have done so far.  I find I can get lost when I paint, and completely lose track of time.  Painting with watercolors has been very satisfying to me.  I love being able to create something beautiful with my hands.  Often I paint nature, like landscapes, mountains, sunsets, and trees.  As far as hobbies go, painting with watercolors is relatively inexpensive, and great fun.  Painting allows my mind to wander through the seemingly endless possibilities each color contains.

Vocabulary:

1. watercolor (noun): A type of water-soluble paint that creates a unique effect.
2. improvement (noun): The action of making something better.

4. like (preposition): Having the same or similar qualities; For example.
5. hobbies (noun): An activity to do in spare time for entertainment or enjoyment.
6. relatively (adverb): In comparison with something else.

Vocabulary Exercise: Fill in the blank with the appropriate vocabulary word.

1.  The cost of bread is ____________ equal to that of milk nowadays.
2.  I have many ________ including hiking, painting, and playing the guitar.
3.  While I used to use acrylics, recently I have started using __________ to paint.
4.  The meal was not ______________, I had to order a pizza afterward because I was still so hungry.

Grammar Point: Prepositions

There are about 150 prepositions in American English.  A preposition can be a word or group of words, usually preceding a noun or pronoun, that indicates time, direction, location, spatial relationships, or introduces an object.  Some examples of prepositions include: above, against, between, into, like, of, and with.

Grammar Excercise:

Now it's your turn to practice with prepositions!  Think of a hobby you enjoy and write a brief paragraph about it.  Include what time of day and location you practice this hobby, and any necessary objects or tools.  After you write your paragraph go back and underline each preposition you used.

  3. That is an amazing painting. I am awful at painting and drawing. My students used to beg me not to draw! You could do painting with your ESL class to go along with a project, to teach the class how to write up a procedure, or for some other creative purpose.
I really like your entry and the grammar and vocabulary points. Good work!
