Meet My Dog Louie (Blog Post #2)
![]() |
After a long walk, there is nothing Louie appreciates more than a nap on the couch. Even though Louie has gotten older, his spirit for life and his love for his family has not faded. I am so grateful my family and I were able to adopt Louie and recommend anyone interested in having a pet dog adopt as well instead of buying a dog from a breeder. There are so many other wonderful dogs just like Louie waiting for their forever home.

Grammar Point: Proper Nouns
You are likely already familiar with common nouns which are general names for people, places, or things. For example, in the sentence "Are all the boys and girls in your class nice?" boys, girls, and class are all common nouns. However, not all nouns are common or referring to a general person, place, or thing. Proper nouns are used when speaking about the name of specific people, places, or things. For example, I can re-write the previous example, "Are Jose and Andrea in Mrs. Knight's class nice?" by substituting proper nouns for the common nouns. Instead of boys and girls, I referenced two specific students using their names. Similarly, while class in the first example is a common noun Mrs. Knight's class is a proper noun because it is referring to a specific class, not a general thing. Proper nouns, the specific name of the person, place, or thing, should always begin with a capital.
Grammar Excercise: Circle the proper noun from each group, and write it correctly on the line.
1. paper samantha sun ______________
2. pencil dresser ms. smith ______________
3. tommy car bottle ______________
4. diego man water ______________

6. calender shirt dr. roberts ______________

What you and your family did in adopting Louie was amazing! Our family has wanted to adopt a dog for the longest, until the opportunity to buy a beautiful and loving husky came along, Milo. Milo is our first pet, first dog, and first husky. Dogs just give so much free love with nothing in return. I'm in love with the grammar exercise. Identifying the correct, proper noun and rewriting it correctly was a great idea!
